The first half of 2024 in albums
Peggy Gou - I Hear You
Peggy Gou’s highly anticipated debut record unexpectedly explores alternative and trip-hop themes, an undeniably welcome surprise. Many other tracks maintain her summery, Euro House vibe which we already know and love. It’s an unmissable album to kick off our list.
Khruangbin - A LA SALA
The Texan trio are back with their familiar hi-fi sound. There’s a modest, bare-bones vibe, and the gentle drumming and relaxed pace has been the perfect backdrop to many summer evenings so far. It’s a strong recommendation to set the tone for the rest of your year.
Charli XCX - BRAT
Charli's done it again with "BRAT". An absolute banger from start to finish, the electropop masterpiece is like a love letter to the London rave scene, with Charli's signature futuristic twist. The production is next level, somehow both stripped-back and in-your-face. It's giving major Y2K nostalgia mixed with that hyperpop edge we've come to expect from Charli. It's currently sitting pretty as the highest-rated album of 2024 on Metacritic. If you ask me, "BRAT" isn't just one of the best albums of the year – it's Charli at her absolute peak.
Adrianne Lenker - Bright Future
Lenker's sixth solo album is a cosy, bittersweet hug recorded straight to tape. Their signature soul-baring lyrics and intricate guitar work shine as always, gifting us with a heartstring-tugging masterclass in songwriting that we just can’t get enough of.
English Teacher - This Could Be Texas
This is an absolute gem. Produced by Marta Salogni, this album touches indie-prog, rock, folk electronica, and post-punk. English Teacher tackle the themes on all of our minds, including the cost-of-living crisis, with sharp, witty songwriting, and Lily Fontaine’s vocals impress from the beginning. Critics are raving about it and we reckon it’s a must listen.
The Smile - Wall of Eyes
Experimental and playful, this album gets better with every listen. Their sophomore album, no one was sure if it would get over the second album hump, but sure enough it’s come out as one of our fav so far this year. With its slick production, haunting melodies and Greenwood’s magic guitar, its even been mooted to be better than Radiohead. What do you think?
Cloud Nothings - Final Summer
Cloud Nothings' "Final Summer," is a certified indie gem. The band’s eighth album showcases catchy hooks; experimental, shimmering soundscapes; and crisp production, along with their signature indie sound that we love. It’s been praised for its ambition and perfect execution and we tend to agree. It could well be your next fav, so if you haven’t already, give it a listen.
Dehd - Poetry
Dehd have blended pop-punk, Americana, and slacker indie in this, their fifth album. Earworm potential, bold harmonies and slick production make it a contender for album of the summer. Its general, catchy, indie vibe helps too!
Chanel Beads - Your Day Will Come
The debut album of Shane Lavers' NYC-based project, "Your Day Will Come," serves up a unique blend of ambient, post-punk, and dissociative dream-pop that's both beautiful and slightly off-kilter. The album's sound is like a gorgeous half-forgotten memory, with chunky drum samples, spectral vocals, and reverby guitars that feel on the verge of collapse. Both unsettling and endearing, Lavers’ “beautiful and shitty” sound is one that intrigues and excites us for what else he has to offer. Meanwhile, we’ve got this one on repeat.
Hyperdrama - Justice
Justice's "Hyperdrama" is a flashy comeback that blends electro-house with '80s pop and hints of gabber. Standout tracks like "Generator" and collabs with Tame Impala and Miguel showcase their knack for pulsing beats and polished production. It's not as raw as their early work, but it's their strongest in years. "Hyperdrama" is maximalist, danceable, and intricately crafted. If you love electronic music with a side of pop sheen, this album's a must-listen. Justice proves they're still electronic music royalty in 2024!
