Following a pretty outstanding year of music, music lovers across the UK and Ireland were excited to see the announcement of this year's Mercury Prize nominees at the end of July.

The annual award, which celebrates and highlights great music and artists (with emphasis from the organisation that this is all that counts), shortlists 12 ‘Albums of the Year.’ Later, the winner is announced and receives a trophy, £25,000 in cash, and the accompanying publicity that such a prestigious accolade brings.

This year’s list, like most, features a mix of well-established artists and newcomers. Many nominees won’t surprise you (hint: think lime green), while others may introduce you to something new.
