Letter to Agneta: an electrifying first snapshot of Seasunday

A crunchy, tongue-in-cheek anthem about the flustered shame of wanting someone; a head-banging, post-punk apology from a modern-day Odysseus to his Penelope; a breezy, alt-rock love letter to summer flings; a bass-driven tale of drunken embarrassment — Seasunday’s first EP, Letter to Agneta is a restless, genre-bending amuse-bouche of what these four musicians can do when they come together.

Raw, playful, unapologetic, the 4-track EP introduces the band on their own terms: with a refusal to be pinned down and a promise to keep their sound in motion “It’s a snapshot of who we are at the moment, and who we were when we met”, says lead singer Angus Carruthers.

Released 13 February; Víctor, Álvar, Juan and Angus recorded this EP in Metrónomo, a studio that provides free sessions to Madrid’s musicians. They only had 4 hours of studio time to put it together and no other option but doing it live. They managed to do 3 takes of each song and then picked the best ones. A friend-of-a-friend, Jayco Jr., took care of the production, and Angus himself did the graphic design for the cover.

At a time when too many creative decisions are made by committee, Seasunday manages to do a lot with very little: a few favours here and there, a handful of solid friendships and a great deal of determination. A borrowed drum kit, parents driving them to gigs in the family van, a girlfriend’s dad filming their debut music video on an old MiniDV, a friend flying in from London to record their first gig — this EP is the result of many hands working together, but it is the band’s energy and undeniable talent that ties all of this together into a standout first release. Letter to Agneta tells a vibrant story of small venues, cheap tickets, beer-sticky floors, girlfriends making t-shirts, and friends hauling their plus-ones along for the ride.

Above all else, the band has welcomed their first release with a feeling of gratitude. “It shows that the people that surround us are willing to bet on us and support us”, says Angus, “If this was the only thing we released” –he continues– “I would be happy”.
